Architectural Exhibit Awards

As a leader in the field of educational facilities, you are invited to participate in the annual VEFP Exhibition of School Planning and Architecture.

This year’s exhibit and award ceremony will take place in Hotel Roanoke and Conference Center in Roanoke, Virginia, February 27th – February 28th, 2012 as a part of the annual conference. All projects will be displayed as a part of the conference exhibition.

2012 School Planning & Architectural Exhibition Criteria

The jury considers how well the project satisfies its own planning and design intent. Any project within the last three years can be submitted for review. The evaluation considers both the written narrative and the planning and design responses in four areas, with the heaviest weighting on the learning environment.

Learning Environment – Describe how the learning environment:

  • Reflects the desired learning program
  • Supports a variety of Learning styles and methods for delivering instruction
  • Supports a “Learning anytime, anywhere” philosophy
  • Enables all Learners to be successful
  • Supports future changes in Educational delivery systems
  • Supports virtual instruction offering wider arrays of courses while providing flexibility for students in non-traditional settings

Physical Environment– Describe the physical attributes of your learning environment and how it:

  • Relates to the learner/user – What are the qualities of the school that puts the children first, with an emphasis on achievement, relationships as a resource, and safety and inclusiveness
  • How does the environment make a difference for the students
  • Supports the learning environment/activities
  • Demonstrates sustainability
  • Demonstrates appropriate use of materials, systems, and other building elements
  • Relates to the existing site and the greater environment
  • Inspires both internally and externally
  • Successful achieves the Vision and Goals

Community Involvement and Environment – Describe how the planning and design responds:

  • Engaged the community, creating a sense of ownership
  • Took advantage of the assets available within the community
  • Fostered community use/joint-use/partnerships
  • Provided an avenue to economic development/community redevelopment
  • Reflects the unique needs of the community and local workforce
  • Celebrates the unique attributes of the community
  • Serves as a center of the community
  • Connects students to their community

Planning Process – Define and describe the process used in the planning of this facility including:

  • Who was involved in the process
  • How did the process affect the learning environment
  • How did the planning team continue to be involved through the design, construction and post occupancy phases
  • What methods were used throughout the process to ensure the final environment would align with the Vision and Goals set during the planning phase
  • Include a timeline of the planning process and a list of participants
Multiple projects in each category may be recognized as an award winning educational facility. The jury will award all projects that best meet the criteria and stand out as exceptional and inspiring. Each award winning project will be specially noted at the award ceremony, positioned within the 2011 conference VEFP web site, and included in the VEFP press release.

  • Design Concept Award - Projects in Design Phase
  • Projects of Distinction -New Construction - Elementary, Middle, High School and Addition/Renovations - Elementary, Middle, High School

Each project submission will include one CD of high resolution photos and the electronic forms. Send to the following address:

Panels must be delivered to the Hotel Roanoke Conference Center, Roanoke Virginia no later than February 27, 2012. If you intend to carry them to the site please contact Vijay Ramnarain.
